Waiting for that first conscious smile is one of those experiences you remember for a long time. When does it actually appear and how do you recognize it?

Angel smile – first faces already in mom’s belly

Your baby starts “practicing” making faces even before birth. In ultrasound images you can sometimes see how the little one sucks their thumb, clenches fists, or makes various grimaces. That’s how they learn about their body.

After birth we observe the so-called angel smile – a completely unconscious reflex. It appears during sleep, feeding, and sometimes even while urinating. It usually disappears on its own around the 2nd month of life because the baby’s motor neurons are still immature. They have no control over it.

When do babies start smiling consciously?

That long-awaited moment – when your little one consciously smiles back at your face or voice – most often occurs between 6 and 12 weeks of age. Most parents notice it around 6–8 weeks. If it appears later for your baby, that’s normal too. Every child has their own pace.

A conscious smile, also called social smile, means that your little one is starting to recognize your face and voice. It’s an important developmental milestone – with each passing day there will be more and more such smiles.

When do babies smile most willingly?

Little ones smile most often when they are relaxed, well-fed, and happy. Watch for it during feeding, bathing, or when they’re just lying there looking at your face. Babies love to imitate – if you smile at them often, there’s a better chance they’ll return the smile.

How to encourage your baby’s first smile?

Smile at them and maintain eye contact

Sing lullabies or make funny sounds

Talk to your baby about what you’re doing

Gently tickle their tummy or feet

Play peek-a-boo – cover your face and reveal it – this usually brings out laughter

When your little one smiles at you for the first time – savor that moment. It’s special.

From smile to laughter

The next milestone is the first loud laugh. It usually appears around 4 months of age, in response to funny faces, sounds, or situations. A cat outside the window, a silly face – it takes very little for your baby to burst into laughter.

When should you see a doctor?

If by the end of the 3rd month of life your baby still hasn’t shown any conscious smile, mention it to your pediatrician during your visit. Usually it’s just individual developmental pace, but it’s worth checking.

Summary

The angel smile accompanies your little one from the very first days of life. A conscious smile most often appears between 6 and 12 weeks. Don’t compare your child to others – every baby develops at their own pace. Enjoy every moment, because these first smiles are only the beginning.

One smile from your little one can light up the entire day.
