Why won’t the baby sleep in a crib? Because they know it’s warm and safe with mommy and daddy. Your job is to create that same atmosphere in their own crib.

How to teach your baby to sleep in a crib?

There is no one magic solution that works for every child. You can try sleep routines, gradually reducing stimuli before bed, or tiring your little one out so they actually want to rest. Most importantly, make sure your child feels safe and knows you’re nearby the whole time.

One-year-old won’t sleep in the crib

If your older baby suddenly refuses to sleep in the crib, think about what changed. Maybe they’re teething and it hurts to fall asleep? Maybe something scared them in the crib? Or maybe they just figured out that sleeping with parents is more fun and are trying to “win” you over?

Once you find the cause and remove it, getting back to normal will be easier. Your child needs to know they can come to you when scared – but that they won’t return to your bed. Every time, you take them back to the crib, wait until they fall asleep, and go back to your own bed.

Child wakes up at night and won’t go back to sleep

Your little one comes back to you at night because they need closeness. They’ll keep doing this until that need disappears. Once they finally realize you’re watching over them even when you’re not sitting right there, they’ll start sleeping through the night on their own.

Child won’t sleep in the crib during the day

Create the right conditions for sleep: darken the room, turn down the music, ask household members for a moment of quiet. Your child needs a consistent daily schedule – if naps always happen at the same time, falling asleep comes easier. Watch your baby and catch the moment when their eyes start to close on their own.

Effective ways to help your child get used to the crib

Choose the right crib

The crib should be stable, made from solid materials. Check if the mattress height is adjustable – a newborn needs different settings than an older child.

Use a cradle

If your baby is used to rocking, a cradle can help. When your child falls asleep in the cradle, you can move them to the crib or leave them in the cradle – this also teaches independent sleeping.

Create a cozy environment

Soft bedding, a favorite swaddle, neutral colors – all of this makes the crib become a safe place.

Introduce a bedtime routine

Bath time, reading a favorite book, rocking in your arms, soft music. The routine must be calm and always the same, so your child knows: now it’s time for sleep.

Start with naps in the crib

If your baby always falls asleep in your arms, try short naps in the crib during the day first. After a few days, it will be easier to put them there for the night.

The “soothe and release” method

Stay nearby when your child is falling asleep, but don’t rock them to sleep. Leave the door open and watch from the doorway. Over time, a goodnight kiss will be enough.

The 3-5-7 method

Systematically extending the breaks between each visit to the crib. After each crying episode, you wait first 3 minutes, then 5, then 7, until finally the child falls asleep on their own.

Consult your pediatrician

If despite everything your child still won’t sleep in the crib, talk to your doctor. Sometimes the cause is medical – reflux, allergies, colic – and needs to be addressed first.

When to start teaching?

The sleep and wake rhythm usually settles around 12 weeks of age. That’s when some parents start preparing their child for independent sleep. Some babies sleep through the night from the first weeks, others need more time.

Remember: every child is different. What works for one baby won’t work for another. Be patient, watch your child, and look for solutions that fit them specifically.

Before you start teaching independent sleep, try to see the world from your baby’s perspective.
