It’s a moment that opens up completely new opportunities for discovering the world. At Little Academy, we observe these beautiful stages of growth every day, which is why we want to share our knowledge on how to support your child in mastering this important skill.

Why is holding the head up so difficult for a newborn?

Imagine that your baby’s head weighs as much as four apples and makes up as much as one-fourth of their entire body length. In adults, that proportion is only one-eighth. On top of that, for nine months in the womb the baby stayed in a flexed position – their spine curved like the letter C, and their muscles became accustomed to that posture.

After birth, the baby has to learn something completely new – tensing the neck and back muscles in a way that allows them to lift this relatively heavy head. It’s a real challenge that requires time, patience, and proper support from parents.

When does a baby start lifting their head? Development timeline

First month of life

During this period, your baby’s head drops limply when you try to pick them up. This is completely natural – their muscles are just beginning to learn how to work together. By the end of the first month, some babies can lift their head for a moment while lying on their tummy, but these are only short, few-second attempts.

Second month of life

Your baby becomes more confident in lifting their head for a few seconds, especially while lying on their tummy. They may also try turning their head left and right, following interesting objects or your face with their eyes. During this stage, you still need to fully support the head while carrying them.

Third month of life – a breakthrough

Around the third month, most babies begin to lift their heads more steadily. While lying on their tummy, they can hold their head at a 45-degree angle for several seconds, sometimes even longer. This is an important milestone – your child begins to discover the world from a new perspective.

Fourth to sixth month – full control

Between the fourth and sixth month, babies gain full control of their head. They can look around freely, turn their head in all directions, and hold it steady in different positions. This paves the way for the next skills – sitting, crawling, and eventually walking.

How to recognize if a baby is holding their head correctly?

At Little Academy, we observe babies according to simple criteria of healthy development. When a three-month-old is lying on their tummy, we pay attention to a few things:

Elbows are under the shoulders – giving the baby stable support

Legs are relaxed and extended – not tense, but loose

Eyes are directed parallel to the floor – the baby looks straight ahead, without tilting the head back

The head is the highest point of the body – lifted naturally, without strain

Watch out for tilting the head back!

Sometimes parents confuse tilting the head back with proper head control. How to tell the difference? Look at your child from the side – if their head is thrown far back and you can’t see their neck from behind, it’s a sign the baby is tilting instead of lifting their head properly. In such a case, it’s worth consulting a physiotherapist.

Practical exercises to support development

Tummy time – the foundation of development

Laying your baby on their tummy is the most important exercise for learning to hold the head up. Start with 2–3 minutes a few times a day, gradually extending the time. Remember, it’s a big effort for your little one – don’t overdo it.

Tip from Little Academy: Lie down on the floor face-to-face with your baby. Your face at eye level will motivate them to lift their head to look at you.

Playing with colorful toys

Use bright, high-contrast toys that will attract your baby’s attention. Slowly move the toy from left to right, encouraging your little one to follow it with their eyes and turn their head. This is a great exercise to strengthen the neck muscles.

Rocking on a large ball

If you have a large exercise ball, place your baby tummy-down on it (holding them securely!) and gently rock. This exercise not only strengthens muscles but also develops the sense of balance. Start with very gentle movements.

Carrying “airplane style”

When your baby is around 3 months old, you can carry them in the “airplane” position – tummy resting on your forearm, head supported near the crook of your elbow. This position naturally encourages lifting the head and looking around.

Changing positions during the day

Don’t keep your baby in the same position all the time. Change it – sometimes on their back, sometimes on their side (under supervision), sometimes in your arms. Each position is an opportunity to practice different muscle groups.

How to safely lift and carry a baby who cannot hold their head yet?

Lifting step by step

First, make contact – gently touch your baby, say something nice so they know you’re approaching

Slide one hand under the bottom and back – this will be the main support

Place your other hand under the head and neck – this ensures stabilization

Lift slowly and smoothly – without sudden movements

Hold your baby close – the feeling of closeness gives them security

What to avoid?

Never lift your baby by the arms – this can cause injury

Don’t lift only under the armpits – the head will flop down

Avoid sudden movements – they can frighten your baby and cause neck injury

Don’t rush upright carrying – wait until your baby is ready

When to worry about lack of progress?

Every child develops at their own pace, but there are certain signs that should prompt a consultation with a pediatrician:

After the 4th month the baby still doesn’t try to lift their head

By the 6th month the head still drops limply when picked up

The baby tilts their head back instead of lifting it properly

The baby holds their head asymmetrically – always to one side

There is excessive or too little muscle tension

At Little Academy, we work with experienced physiotherapists who regularly observe the motor development of our children. Early detection of any irregularities allows for quick intervention and effective help.

Supporting development at Little Academy

In our nurseries and kindergartens, we place great importance on the proper motor development of the youngest. Our rooms are equipped with safe mats, exercise balls, and various tools that support physical growth.

Daily activities supporting development

Our qualified caregivers organize activities every day, tailored to each child’s age and abilities:

Playtime on the mat – a safe space for exercises

Sensory activities – stimulating different senses

Exercises with physiotherapy elements – led by specialists

Music and movement activities – combining movement with rhythm

Individual approach to every child

We understand that every child is different. That’s why our caregivers observe and document each child’s progress, adjusting activities to their individual needs and pace of development. We regularly update parents about progress and jointly create a plan for supporting development.

Remember – patience is the key to success

Learning to hold the head up is the first of many milestones in your baby’s development. It’s a process that requires time, patience, and consistency. Don’t compare your little one to other children – each has their own pace of growth.

Celebrate every small achievement. Today’s few-second head lift will turn into several seconds next week, and into full control in a month. Support your baby, play with them, talk to them, and above all – show them love and acceptance.

At Little Academy, we are with you at every stage of this beautiful journey. Our experience in caring for the youngest, combined with international standards of early education, ensures the best conditions for harmonious development – physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

Remember, if you have any doubts about your baby’s development, it is always worth consulting a pediatrician or physiotherapist. Early intervention, if needed, can significantly influence your child’s future development. In our facilities, we provide regular access to specialists who offer support and professional advice.

Holding the head up independently is one of the first important milestones in your baby’s development.
