It’s a moment that opens up a whole new world of possibilities for exploring and discovering. At Little Academy, we witness these beautiful stages of growth every day, and we’d like to share our knowledge with you on how to support your child in mastering this essential skill.

Why is holding up the head so difficult for a newborn?

Imagine your baby’s head weighing as much as four apples and making up about one quarter of the entire body length. In adults, this proportion is only about one eighth. On top of that, for nine months in the womb, the baby stayed in a flexed position – the spine curved like the letter C, and the muscles adapted to that posture.

After birth, the baby has to learn something completely new – tightening the neck and back muscles in a way that allows them to lift this relatively heavy head. It’s a true challenge that takes time, patience, and proper support from parents.

When does a baby start lifting their head? Development timeline

First month

During this stage, the baby’s head falls limply when you try to lift them. This is completely natural – their muscles are only just starting to learn how to work together. By the end of the first month, some babies may briefly lift their head while lying on their tummy, but these are only short, few-second attempts.

Second month

Your little one will begin lifting their head more confidently for a few seconds, especially when lying on their tummy. They may also start turning their head left and right, following interesting objects or your face. At this stage, you still need to fully support the head when carrying your baby.

Third month – a breakthrough

Around the third month, most babies start holding their heads more steadily. While lying on their tummy, they can hold their head at a 45-degree angle for several seconds or even longer. This is an important moment – the child begins to discover the world from a new perspective.

Fourth to sixth month – full control

Between the fourth and sixth month, babies usually achieve full control of their head movements. They can freely look around, turn their head in all directions, and hold it steady in different positions. This paves the way for the next milestones – sitting, crawling, and eventually walking.

How do you know if your baby is holding their head correctly?

At Little Academy, we observe children according to simple developmental criteria. When a three-month-old is lying on their tummy, we look for the following:

Elbows are under the shoulders – giving the baby a stable base

Legs are relaxed and stretched out – not stiff, but loose

Eyes looking parallel to the floor – the baby looks straight ahead, without tilting the head back

The head is the highest point of the body – lifted naturally, without strain

Watch out for tilting the head back!

Sometimes parents confuse head tilting with proper head control. How to tell the difference? Look at your child from the side – if the head is thrown far back and you can’t see the neck from behind, that’s a sign your baby is tilting rather than lifting their head. In such cases, it’s worth consulting a physiotherapist.

Practical exercises to support development

Tummy time – the foundation

Laying your baby on their tummy is the single most important exercise for learning head control. Start with 2–3 minutes a few times a day, gradually increasing the time. Remember – it’s a big effort for your baby, so don’t overdo it.

Tip from Little Academy: Lie down on the floor facing your baby. With your face at eye level, your little one will be more motivated to lift their head to look at you.

Playing with colorful toys

Use bright, high-contrast toys to capture your baby’s attention. Slowly move the toy from one side to the other, encouraging your child to follow it with their eyes and turn their head. This is a great exercise for strengthening the neck muscles.

Rocking on a large ball

If you have a big exercise ball, place your baby on it tummy-down (always holding them securely!) and gently rock. This exercise not only strengthens muscles but also develops balance. Begin with very gentle movements.

Carrying in “airplane” position

From about three months onward, you can carry your baby in the “airplane” position – tummy down on your forearm, with the head resting in the bend of your elbow. This naturally encourages the baby to lift their head and look around.

Changing positions throughout the day

Don’t keep your baby in the same position all the time. Alternate between lying on their back, side (with supervision), and in your arms. Every position offers a chance to strengthen different muscle groups.

How to safely lift and carry a baby who doesn’t yet support their head?

Step-by-step lifting

Make contact first – gently touch your baby, say something soothing, so they know you’re near

Slide one hand under the bottom and back – this will be the main support

Place your other hand under the head and neck – ensuring stability

Lift slowly and smoothly – avoid sudden movements

Hold your baby close – closeness gives them a sense of safety

What to avoid?

Never lift your baby by the arms – this can cause injury

Don’t hold only under the armpits – the head will flop backwards

Avoid sudden movements – they can frighten your baby and strain the neck

Don’t rush upright carrying – wait until your child is ready

When should you be concerned about a lack of progress?

Every baby develops at their own pace, but there are some warning signs worth discussing with a pediatrician:

By the 4th month, the baby still isn’t trying to lift their head

At 6 months, the head still falls limply when lifted

The baby tilts their head back instead of lifting it correctly

The baby holds the head asymmetrically – always to one side

There is excessive or insufficient muscle tone

At Little Academy, we work closely with experienced physiotherapists who regularly monitor children’s motor development. Detecting any irregularities early allows for quick intervention and effective support.

Supporting development at Little Academy

In our nurseries and preschools, we place great emphasis on healthy motor development. Our spaces are equipped with safe mats, exercise balls, and a variety of tools to support movement skills.

Daily development activities

Our qualified caregivers organize activities every day tailored to each child’s age and abilities:

Playtime on mats – a safe space for exercises

Sensory activities – stimulating different senses

Exercises with physiotherapy elements – guided by specialists

Music and movement games – combining rhythm and motion

An individual approach for every child

We understand that every baby is unique. That’s why our caregivers observe and document each child’s progress, tailoring activities to their needs and pace of development. Parents are regularly updated, and we work together to plan how best to support their child’s growth.

Remember – patience is the key to success

Learning to hold up the head is the first of many developmental milestones. It’s a process that requires time, patience, and consistency. Don’t compare your child to others – each has their own rhythm of growth.

Celebrate every little achievement. Today’s few-second lift will soon turn into longer control, and before long – full head stability. Support your child, play with them, talk to them, and above all – show love and acceptance.

At Little Academy, we are with you every step of the way on this wonderful journey of development. Our experience in caring for the youngest children, combined with international standards of early education, provides the best conditions for harmonious growth – physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

And remember – if you ever have doubts about your baby’s development, it’s always best to consult a pediatrician or physiotherapist. Early intervention, if needed, can make a big difference for your child’s future. In our centers, we ensure regular contact with specialists who are ready to offer support and professional guidance.

Holding the head up independently is one of the very first important milestones in your baby’s development.
